Don't be surprised to see some paramedics cruising around on bicycles, instead of ambulances. That's because Tri-State Ambulance now has a Bike Response Team. Two paramedics work as a team, sharing equipment between both of them. The bike team can treat most minor injuries. Plus, they can also help folks suffering from something as serious as a heart attack. Tom Carpenter, of Tri-state Ambulance, says, "We looked into this and thought it'd be a good idea to start now with the number of events that we cover. It's a good way to promote our own health in our own organization. They're out pedaling around and getting exercise, while they're doing the same things they do otherwise."
Carpenter says the bikes are especially helpful at big events, where there are lots of people. First, it can be easier to get to a patient on a bike, than it can be with an ambulance. And secondly, it's more efficient for treating minor injuries. The bike team can provide medical attention, without having to call out an ambulance.
The Bike Response Team will be at Sunday's Applefest parade. They'll also be monitoring things at La Crosse's Oktoberfest Parade, later this month.
