Air pollution alert extended for southern Minn.

Associated Press - February 5, 2010 5:34 PM ET

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is extending its air pollution alert for the southern half of the state through Saturday.

The agency says Friday that light winds and high pressure continue to trap fine particle pollution in the area. As a result, air quality levels in the Twin Cities and Rochester will remain unhealthy for sensitive groups through late Saturday.

Those groups include people with cardiovascular problems, young children and the elderly.

The MPCA first issued its air quality alert for Thursday through Friday.

It also put out a less serious air pollution advisory for other parts of the state, including the cities of Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, Duluth and St. Cloud. That expires Friday as first announced.
