The early start of this flu season has become a big challenge for area schools. 10% of students in the La Crosse School District have been out with flu-like symptoms this week. At Central High School, the number has jumped to 25%.
The district's school nurse coordinator says they started keeping track of the number of students out sick on the first day of school instead of early November when they normally do.
She says as they continue to get daily updates, it's important for schools and parents to communicate. La Crosse School Nurse Coordinator Lynda Narish Johnson says, "we think that by working together with parents checking students out before they come to school and with us making sure that when we see somebody in our health rooms, and our health assistants are trained on this, that if they're not feeling well we're going to be sending them home. We're hoping to keep the numbers down."
