With just a little more than a week left before the school year starts, parents are stocking up on school supplies. But there are ways to "go green" when picking up those pens, pencils and notebooks.
Many stores are now carrying green school products, some of which have been recycled using wood supplies. There's also paper made from sugar cane, crayons made from soy and pencils made from recycled tires.
But La Crosse School District officials say there are other greener choices we can make. Principal of Lincoln Middle School John Gevens says, "thinking about what we use, buying less, and making sure that we're buying only what we need. Again, environmentally friendly and financially friendly as well and so we can win on both ends of this."
Another idea when going school shopping is to make a list. That way you can avoid impulse buying on supplies you don't really need.
