Choking because of an obstructed airway is a leading cause of accidental death.
Tuesday, two elementary school students and their school nurse were recognized for their heroic actions that prevented a choking death.
On May 22, Fourth grader Nathan Gelder was choking on food during lunch at Sand Lake Elementary School in Holmen.
Gelder's friend Kaiden Condos quickly reacted by performing the Heimlich maneuver, ultimately saving Nathan's life.
They had learned how to react from Sand Lake Elementary's School Nurse,Sue Cieslicki, who teaches third grade students about the international choking sign and Heimlich maneuver every year.
Both boys believe they first learned about the international sign for choking and the Heimlich from the presentation by Cieslicki. Kaiden says his parents reinforced the importance of knowing how to use the Heimlich maneuver at home.
Gelder, Condos and Cieslicki received awards for their heroic actions from Gundersen Lutheran, The American Heart Association, Tri-State Ambulance and Med Flight Air.
