Students learn the main essentials of planting a garden

Posted: Updated:

Soil, worms, flowers and vegetables, some of the main essentials that make-up a La Crosse school garden and a perfect environmental lesson for students.

Franklin Elementary School kids were out harvesting veggies in the new school garden Thursday.

Teachers say the garden compliments what the students are learning in the classroom and gives them a chance to watch a garden grow right before their eyes.

"For them to be able to pick a radish and taste it and to know that part of this is going to the food pantry or our school programs, I think that's real meaningful for them too," said Susan Schroeder, Franklin Elementary teacher.

The students also planted flower seeds so they can learn about the life cycle of butterflys and the different types of soils.
