Students at North Woods elementary school had a special event Thursday night to share their knowledge of Africa. It's called Festival of Nations Africa. The event was a showcase of the lessons students learned over the past year while studying the continent of Africa.
Students showed their classroom projects, performed African songs and dances, and spoke about several humanitarian causes in Africa. School officials say projects like this are a great way to show the world's diversity. North Woods Principal Jane Morkan says, "each and every country in Africa is very unique, has its own unique cultures and ways of life, languages, celebrations, they're vastly different and yet we also try to find similarities."
Each year, the school selects a country for students to study. This year's theme, Africa is not a country, was aimed at teaching students that Africa is a large continent and often mistaken for a country.
