Local racecar drivers are starting their engines as a way to show their support for Holmen students who read. It's part of the Race into Reading program at Holmen's Evergreen Elementary School.
Students read so many minutes each month and the school celebrates by bringing in racecars. The kids then get a chance to meet the drivers and sit in the cars. Teachers say the program gives students even more motivation to read. Ruth Scholze from Evergreen Elementary says, "appreciate the time to read. Whether it's with your moms or dads or aunts or uncles or whatever, but take time to read. That's so important."
This year, close to 500 Evergreen students have read nearly 600 thousand minutes.
