Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle has long been opposed to more nuclear power plants in the state, but his stance has changed a bit recently, and under some controversy.
During a stop in La Crosse Thursday, Doyle defended his stance on the issues. The change came shortly after a Florida utility company gave almost $24,000 to his campaign.
The governor now backs recommendations of Wisconsin's Global Warming Task Force, saying a nuclear power plant should be allowed under certain conditions.
"We should be willing to consider nuclear if, and this is a big if, if you can safely dispose of the waste," said Doyle.
The governor says his new take on nuclear energy is not a change, but rather a continuation of what he's always done.
Other recommendations of the task force included increasing mileage standards for vehicles and moving to renewable fuels.
