He is a former Speaker of the House and possible candidate for president in 2012. Thursday, Newt Gingrich made a stop in La Crosse.
He spoke to staff at Gundersen Lutheran about health care in the United States.
The former speaker talked about the need for health care reform, but says the current plan being supported by President Obama has its problems.
He says there is too much spending in the plan and the idea of a federal insurance option would cause problems for the entire system. Gingrich says he would like to see a system that cuts down on insurance fraud and moves to an electronic system of records.
While President Obama wanted to pass a bill soon, Gingrich says the country is better off waiting. "We at least now have the opportunity to try to get to a better bill, and I think that's good, and my hope is that in August the President is going to call in a bipartisan group and reset both the economic question for growth and jobs and reset the health question," says Gingrich.
We also asked Gingrich about the possibility of running for President in 20-12. He said it's too early to make a decision.
