As Wisconsin lawmakers prepare for the start of the 2009 session, a statewide smoking ban is once again expected to be part of the discussion.
Several states, including Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois, have recently enacted statewide smoking bans.
Some La Crosse area bar owners oppose the idea. They say a smoking ban would infringe on their rights as bar owners.
"It's a private buisness, and it's a legal product, and we feel that it's the wrong place to be drawing the line," says Mike Brown, owner of Logan Tavern in La Crosse. "It's crossing the boundary of government influence."
Bar owners also believe that a smoking ban would reduce the amount of patrons, cutting their profits.
