In an effort to help local farmers, Wal-Mart launched a locally grown initiative.
The major retailer plans to increase their partnerships with local farmers and purchase more produce from Wisconsin growers, hoping to boost local economies.
They say this cooperation cuts transportation and energy costs and passes savings and freshness onto consumers.
"It will definitely help us build more relationships with the local farmers and consumers so they can walk into their local Wal-Mart and say 'Hey, this is the local farm I just drove by," said Gordy Farrington, Wal-Mart's Midwest Food Director.
Wal-Mart officials say its stores already buy more than $4 billion in products and services from nearly 1,500 suppliers in the state of Wisconsin.
Over the past two years partnerships with local farmers have grown by 50 percet, which they expect will continue to grow as more partnerships are made.
