Have you ever wanted to own a bridge? Here's your chance. Soldiers Grove is selling the Kickapoo River bridge for one dollar.
It's a way for the Wisconsin village to get around having to demolish a decrepit, old bridge. The Kickapoo River hasn't carried traffic in more than three decades and officials fear it will collapse into the river.
Village board members voted November 8th to sell the bridge and hope buyers will be attracted by the scrap steel and the high scrap prices. Soldiers Grove had tried the same thing once before, but the buyer backed out.
The bridge was built back in 1910 and served as a major connection for the community until a new route was built. The bridge then turned into a fishing spot.
The State Department of Transportation recommended in 1976 that the bridge be closed to traffic because of its age and poor condition. A 2002 inspection also found the bridge to be structurally deficient.
