Safety Tips for Decorating with Christmas Lights

Posted: Updated:

Now that the turkey's been eaten and your Black Friday deals are in the closet, it's time to start decorating for Christmas.

But as you're turning your home into a winter wonderland there are a couple of safety tips to keep in mind especially when it comes to decorating with lights.

The La Crosse Fire Department says its important to make sure you aren't overloading your circuits with too many light strands.

Also remember to keep any lights out of the reach of pets or small children because pulling or chewing on the lights could cause problems.

And be carefully when putting the lights up.

La Crosse Fire Department Lt. Tony Nickelatti says, "People are on ladders, unstable a lot of times. They also put them on Christmas trees that are old, with a lot of dead debris inside of it, so we recommend using artificial or fresh cut."

It's also important to make sure you have a working smoke detector in your home.

Also have an escape plan and outdoor meeting area in case of a fire.
