Minnesota's public hospitals preparing to cut

Associated Press - July 14, 2009 12:24 PM ET

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - It's a hectic summer in the executive offices of public hospitals throughout the state as administrators are faced with big budget cuts.

They're anticipating millions of dollars in reduced state health care spending this spring. They also worry about soaring costs for caring for the uninsured - a result of those state cuts and rising unemployment.

Hospitals that traditionally treat the poor are under the most pressure as they prepare to start their next fiscal years in the next few months.

At Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, board Chairman Mark Bernhardson says HCMC is looking at trimming services that benefit the whole community.

At Regions Hospital in St. Paul, administrators are considering cutting back on treating patients from outside Ramsey County and other cuts.
