Holmen Residents Work to Overturn Fluoride Referendum

If opponents have their way Holmen voters may have to make another decision about their drinking water.

In November 2008, residents in Holmen voted to add flouride to the village's drinking water.

Opponents of the measure now want to overturn the referendum. They believe there's a good reason for revisiting the issue.

"In light of the way the economy has changed, I think that people are going to be more willing to look again at whether or not we want the government to provide services that people can get for themselves," says Anthony Horvath, a Holmen resident organizing the campaign to overturn the flouride referendum.

Horvath says they will begin collecting signatures on their own referendum this summer.

If they collect the 351 signatures needed, the Holmen Village Board will have to consider adopting their resolution. If they don't, the matter will be brought before Holmen voters.

It's estimated initial flouridation of Holmen's drinking water would cost a little more than $140,000.
